The Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) is the European Union's chief instrument for funding research over the period 2007 to 2013. The current FP7 budget is €51 billion over 7 Years (2007-2013).
The funding schemes are:
- Collaborative Research Projects. Projects based on innovative research outputs.
- Networks of Excellence.
- Coordination and Support Actions.
- Marie Curie Actions. These fund research training and mobility of researchers. The main actions are individual fellowships for post-graduate researchers and Marie Curie Networks, where institutions cooperate to provide joint training programmes for researchers.
Competition for FP7 funding is strong. The advantage is that it is collaborative and partners can be selected from all EU states and a large number of associate states permitted to participate.
You must have at least three partners from three EU states.
A proposal for collaborative funding must have a lead partner to define and own the project.
Strict pre-published deadlines apply.
Prepare your projects in advance to be adjusted, fine tuned, partners selected and confirmed and submitted on time.
If you haven’t done it before, seek advice and support. While the process is straightforward, it is rigorous and must comply exactly with all submission and procedural criteria.
Identifying, applying for and accessing EU funding is a different and more focused, long-term process than for domestic grants and subsidies.
